CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland fashion designer Valerie Mayen is a Project Runway alum and the creative mind behind Yellowcake Shop, an apparel and accessories company. She's busy gearing up for her 5th annual Hullabaloo fashion show and fundraising event on Saturday at The Nash on East 80th Street.
Mayen brings a quality aesthetic to her beautifully made women's clothing line. Hullabaloo Heritage, this year's collection, is built of pieces designed with reclaimed garments and textiles curated from five Rust Belt cities.
Each year the show teams up with a worthy cause to raise money. This year's partner is the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. A portion of the proceeds from sales during the event will go to raising awareness of the food bank, and money from sales at the cash bar will be donated to the ACPMP Research Foundation to help find a cure for Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) and appendix cancer.
Mayen has made great strides in fostering the creativity of young designers in Cleveland, and her Hullabaloo show is open to fashion enthusiasts of all ages. Many of her interns are high school students who get on-the-job-training in design and sewing and learn about the business of running a design house and online store.
Along with Mayen's beautiful contemporary designs, Hullabaloo showcases the work and merchandise of a few other local businesses. Before the runway show, attendees will have time for cocktails and shopping at pop-ups including Mavec Collections, which sells hand-painted purses; Trunk men's clothing, which also will dress models on the runway; Amy's Shoes, which also will appear in runway looks; Oceanne Jewelry; and Mayen's own Yellowcake, which will be selling original designs and sketches and taking bids on her runway looks.
Food will be provided by Municipal Deli (opening soon at West 117th Street and Clifton Boulevard), Agostino's Catering, 56 Kitchen, Yuzu, Quarry Hill Orchards, LaBella Cupcakes, Mason's Creamery and Sweet Treats By Shawntel. There will be a pop-up candy bar stocked by Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop. The cash bar will offer cocktails crafted by Tremont Tap House, Cleveland Whiskey and Twist Social Club.
