Cleveland has its major chain hotels - the Ritz Carlton, Marriott and Hyatt Regency, to name a few. But, the Ohio city on Lake Erie also boasts a small, distinct collection of privately-owned boutique hotels, most located in the city's oldest neighborhoods. Though these establishments may lack the range of amenities offered by big city hotels, they offer history, architectural details and a comfortable coziness seldom found at even the Ritz.

Washington Place Bistro & Inn

Formerly known as the Baricelli Inn, the Washington Place Bistro & Inn is located in Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood on the city's east side. The large stone structure, built in 1896 and renovated in 2010, houses a restaurant as well as seven guest suites. All accommodations have private baths with glass showers and 40-inch flat screen TVs. Guests are served a complimentary continental breakfast each morning. Glidden House

The Glidden House is on the Case Western campus, just steps away from the Cleveland Museum of Art and Severance Hall, the home of the Cleveland Orchestra. The 60-room hotel inside a 1910 “French Gothic Eclectic” mansion, according to its Web site, is the former home of the Glidden Paint Company founders, with a more modern addition tucked behind it. Its eight vintage suite have fireplaces, high ceilings and decorative moldings. All accommodations feature discreetly hidden, 42-inch flat-screen television sets wireless Internet access and coffeemakers. Facilities at the Glidden House include a wine bar that serves light meals and appetizers. Full meals may be taken at Sergio's, the Brazilian restaurant located in the property's carriage house. Brownstone Inn

Located just east of downtown, the Brownstone Inn offers five guest rooms, all with private baths and high-speed Internet access. The Victorian townhouse, built in 1874, boasts arched windows, wood paneling and pocket doors among its classic architectural details. Guests can unwind in the parlor - or "relaxation room" - and savor the complimentary breakfast in the red dining room with marble fireplace. Clifford House Bed and Breakfast

Set on a side street in Cleveland's historic Ohio City neighborhood south of downtown, the Queen Anne-style Clifford House offers four guest suites, all with wireless Internet access, refrigerators and central air conditioning.
